We think it's safe to say that Anton Walter had a pretty decent Smukfest 2019.

After having performed his massive overnight hit 'Min Dag' in the Dynaudio Unheard touring studio, he dazzled at Live Camp so convincingly that he won Tak-Rock! Talent-Prisen.

And winning Tak-Rock! Talent-Prisen meant that he and the band secured another gig at the festival - and that they could stick around a little longer, making an encore in the touring recording studio possible.

With unruly texts and compositions, Verdens Sidste Idé [The World's Last Idea], has already made its presence known on the Danish music scene. At Dynaudio Unheard the band recorded 'Hey, Præst' [Hey, Priest]. The song is a heavy-hearted, melancholic goodbye to a friend who's passed away; beautifully composed, and performed in just the right pace to make each word have the proper weight, and the horn emphasizing the sadness of the moment. A truly magical performance.

Why? Because we believe everyone deserves their big break.

Did you know that the top one per cent of artists earn 77 per cent of all record-industry income? A staggering 91 per cent of all artists are completely undiscovered. That’s outrageous. And something needs to be done about it.

Think of them all, tucked away in rehearsal rooms, basements, bedrooms and garages. They’re creating, and sweating, and believing. They’re on it. And no one knows who they are. We want to give something back.

So, we’ve created a state-of-the-art pop-up recording studio and teamed up with a professional producer. We’re going to take it on the road, and we’re going to give that 91 per cent the opportunity to level the balance.

In the Dynaudio Unheard studio star Danish singer-songwriter Ida Cour and her band thoroughly worked through a single song.

Their live take was laid down over a produced backing track, which was then recreated instrument by instrument – piano, cajon, acoustic guitar and stacked vocals, all backed by a click-track to keep everything synced.

We met up with Ida Corr after her recording session to learn about her approach in the recording room, and the hours, weeks and months of work it took to break through as a musician.

Marc Johnson has been playing with sound and music since he was a child and started releasing his own music in 2004.

Since then he has been a prominent artist and provocateur on the Danish hiphop stage collaborating with artists such as L.O.C., USO and Kato.

Johnson isn’t afraid of speaking his mind and sees music, and hiphop especially, as a way of taking a stand and expressing himself.

As a well-known artist on the Danish hiphop stage it seemed almost inevitable that Johnson was to host this year’s Dynaudio Unheard Session.

Dynaudio Unheard Smukfest '18: U$O & Johnson

U$O and Johnson go back. All the way back to '98, where they together with a third Danish rapper, created the highly influential hip-hop trio, B.A.N.G.E.R.S. It's safe to say experience and talent weren't in short supply as the two entered the Dynaudio Unheard mobile studio.

The two rappers had a clear goal with their studio time: to create a track from scratch. Everything had to come together within a few hours. But with their experience and hip-hop know-how U$O and Johnson quickly started bouncing ideas off each other: constructing lyrics, rhymes and stories.

Dynaudio Unheard Smukfest '18: DJ Static & Jøden

Famous Danish artists DJ Static and Jøden, flanked by a slew of talented musicians, started with a pre-recorded basic backing track and then spent the next couple of hours weaving an intricate tapestry of live drums, Hammond organ, rapping, more rapping, singing, beats and stacked vocals.

Recording and layering the parts individually showed just how important it is for the producer to plan, anticipate and form a rapport with the artists.

But this session wasn’t about merely laying down a series of tracks, ticking them off a list and moving on to the next. The creative machinery was whirring nicely, with performances honed, parts refined and reworked, and takes listened to and critiqued – all with a constant dialogue between studio and control-room.

What had started in the morning with a music seed ended at lunchtime in a full, turned-up-to-eleven bombastic funk-rap track. And a very satisfied audience.

Aarhus-based power-trio The Boy That Got Away is 'power' - we can't emphasise that enough. They took yet another approach to recording, opting to capture the perfect performance in one take, rather than layering and building.

They’re no stranger to the studio, so they launched straight into it, totally focussed on capturing the live feeling in their recording. Rock music – especially when it’s this stripped-down – lends itself to the ‘rehearse the shit out of it and then perform the shit out of it’ approach. So while the band churned out a technically flawless performance with every take, it was the vibe they were after.
