Welcome to Ask the Expert.
Today, I have a couple of questions
that are kind of related,
so I'm going to cover both of them.
Rudolf is asking:
"Can I connect a CD-transport
directly to the Focus–series,
or do I need an external DAC"?
At the same time, we have Zhicheng –
Sorry if I don't pronounce that correctly.
"Hey there. I'm thinking to purchase
a DAC for my Xeo 4.
Is it necessary for a better sound?"
That's more or less the same question.
When you have a digital speaker
like the Focus,
or the previous series we have created,
would it be better to buy
an external DAC to improve the sound?
The DAC is a D/A converter
converting a digital signal
to an analogue signal.
And very often a better DAC
will result in better sound.
Should I do that on
on my digital, active speaker?
And in both cases the answer is actually ‘No’.
That should not really be needed
or even a good idea
because these speakers
have digital crossovers.
Whenever the signal comes
into the loudspeaker,
it has to be converted to a digital signal
for the crossover to work.
There is no way
to pass the signal through the loudspeaker
in a purely analogue way,
because that's the design of the crossover.
And there's lots of benefits in that
that we covered in a different video.
But the shorter signal path
will always be to go
with a digital signal
into the loudspeaker,
because then you can take that
digital signal directly
and start working on the crossover.
Whereas the analogue signal
will be converted back to digital
inside the speaker.
So if you have a digital signal
like in your CD player,
go through the DAC, convert
to analogue into the speaker,
it goes back to digital.
Why do that extra step?
In the end, just use the digital signal
directly into the speaker.
That will give the best performance.
