So we got a question: For Rock or Metal,
is it worth it to upgrade from two-way
to three-way passive speakers?
It is an interesting question.
So first step is: What is the difference
between two-way and three-way?
And essentially that is
how many drivers are in the speaker.
So if you have a tweeter and the woofer,
you have a two-way speaker.
If you have a tweeter, a midrange and
a woofer, you have a three-way speaker.
There are complicated versions of that.
But for now, we stick to that
because that's the question.
Generally, if you have a three-way
speaker, you can increase
the maximum sound pressure level.
You can simply play louder on a three-way speaker
because you are splitting out
the output on more drivers.
So you'll be able
to turn up the volume louder.
So if you want to play loud,
you generally need a three-way speaker
over a two-way speaker...
all else being equal, because you can always
discuss is a good two-way speaker
better than a bad three-way speaker?
Things like this.
But assuming everything else is equal,
a larger three-way speaker
will be able to play louder.
That's not specifically for Rock or Metal.
That really depends on how you want
your music to be played.
I don't see that specific to music genres.
A lot of people want to play loud
with different types of music,
and I know people who play only Rock and Metal
but doesn't necessarily play particularly loud.
So it really depends
on what you want to achieve.
In general a three-way speaker
adds complexity,
So it's more difficult to design a three-way
speaker compared to a two-way speaker.
So what it also means
is for the same price,
very often you'll find a two-way
speaker is better than a three-way.
Simply because two good drivers
might be better than three bad drivers.
So you may end up with a better result
with a good two-way speaker.
So it really depends on
the budget as well.
But looking to upgrade it might be
worth it if you're looking for more SPL.
